Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
