Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
