Be clever, play smart, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
