Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
