Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
