Be smart, play clever, and learn how to play craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
