Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
