Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
