Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps.
