Be smart, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
